Matchups and picks 🥊🏀

On Sunday evening in Diriyah Arena, Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, YouTube star Jake Paul, and former Love Island contestant Tommy Fury are finally set to face off in what is expected to be one of the biggest boxing bouts of the 2023 schedule.

Leading bookmakers say that the odds between the two fighters are close, so no matter what people think about the event, they expect a lot of people to watch and bet on the fight.

Jake Paul, who has claimed victories over UFC legends Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, is currently the slight favorite to win. However, with Fury hailing from a renowned family in British boxing, an upset would not be surprising.

Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury

The marketing team behind this pay-per-view fight has done a terrific job of promoting this match as Jake Paul’s first real challenge in his boxing career.

Indeed, they are trying to make this fight look like a long-awaited test for Paul as he finally faces a professional boxer.

Sadly, Fury might not be the right boxer to push Paul to his limits, despite being the half-brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Even though Paul has been criticized for who he has chosen to fight, he has improved as a fighter, and Fury sees him as the biggest challenge of his career.

He may be a showman, but he has shown over and over again that he has good boxing skills. He can throw a lot of combinations and has a strong knockout power that can lead to another exciting finish that will make his million followers on social media go crazy.

With a knockout rate of 66.6% and an average fight time of 4.3 rounds, Paul has developed good boxing instincts and versatility. Fury, on the other hand, has had less than inspiring performances, with only half of his fights coming against opponents with professional victories. However, Fury's classical training in boxing gives him an edge, with a 50% knockout rate and a long, stiff jab that can punish Paul from a distance.

Despite both fighters being evenly matched, many factors seem to favor Paul. He has faced tougher opponents than Fury and has better speed, power, experience, and conditioning. Moreover, the fact that they have been preparing to fight each other for over a year could benefit Fury more, as he has been solely focused on the fight, whereas Paul has been promoting the card and his other ventures.

In the end, it looks like Paul has a good chance of coming out on top in this fight, with too many factors falling in his favor. As a result, the prediction is for Paul to win, and he represents the best bet in the Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury boxing matchup.

Los Angeles Lakers @ Dallas Mavericks

The Los Angeles Lakers (28-32) will be looking to sustain their newfound momentum as they take on the Dallas Mavericks (32-29) on Sunday, 3:30 PM at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.

The Lakers kicked off their post-All-Star weekend campaign on a high note after scoring a morale-boosting win over the Golden State Warriors, 124-111, last Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks snapped their three-game losing skid with a 142-116 rout against the San Antonio Spurs also on Thursday.

This will mark the third time the Lakers and the Mavericks meet this season, and the result of this game may make-or-break playoff chances for both teams down the road.

Despite finding themselves still in 13th place in the Western Conference Standings, the Lakers are merely 3.5 games behind the Mavericks. A win for Los Angeles will allow them to break into the play-in picture where four more teams are jockeying for better positions.

Dallas doesn’t also have much breathing room either. They may be sixth right now in the Western Conference ladder but a loss to the Lakers on Sunday will send them to 9th place - a position no contender wants to be in.

The Mavericks opened as the favorites at -165 (moneyline) and -3.5 points (spread) on the betting line, which is not really a surprise since they defeated the Lakers on two separate occasions this season.

Prediction: The Mavericks parade arguably the best backcourt combination throughout the league in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Both walking buckets in their own right, these players are capable to will their team to victory with their sheer offensive talent alone.

However, Dallas will be facing a Lakers team that significantly rejigged the supporting casts around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. By looking closely into their form in their last two games, anyone can tell that this an entirely different squad, far from the team that mightily struggled to muster any sort of chemistry for the first four-and-a-half months of the season.

In their last two-head-to-head meetings, the Lakers struggled to contain Doncic who casually registered 32 and 35 points. However, with the arrival of Malik Beasley, Rui Hachimura, and Mo Bamba, Los Angeles has considerably fortified its perimeter and interior defense, which makes it harder for Doncic to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Once the Lakers managed to contain the Slovenian wunderkind to some extent, it would be a lot easier for the purple-and-gold to control the flow of the game and keep the Mavericks at bay the rest of the way. Of course, they will still have to be wary of a potential scoring explosion from the Mavs’ other All-Star Kyrie Irving. But unlike the previous games, this Lakers’ team can now send stoppers to limit the productivity of opposing teams' stars.

Lakers 120, Mavs 114

Toronto Raptors @ Cleveland Cavaliers

The Raptors’ decision to stay put and keep their key players intact past the trade deadline shows their intention for the rest of the season. Toronto (29-31), despite a shaky start, is still very much in the thick of the fight for a playoff or at least a play-in berth.

The Cavaliers cooled a bit after a scorching start to the season. Still, Cleveland remains in a favorable position to secure their playoff stint since LeBron James departed for LA in 2018.

The fourth and last regular-season meeting for these two teams this season, this game offers some intriguing notes sports bettors need to pay attention to. While the Cavs might be boasting a better record at 38-25, they never defeated the Raptors in all three games so far. Indeed, Toronto has a spotless record against Cleveland this season, beating them 108-105 on October 19, 100-88 on November 28, and 118-107 on December 23.

Prediction: The Cavs might be a talented team on paper, but the Raptors are a team of hard workers. They outrebound the Cavs in all three games and made it difficult for them in the interior.

In this season finale, expect Cleveland to focus more effort on winning the rebounding battle. They know the fact that getting outhustled by the Raptors played a crucial role in their losses. Still, they will be needing a big scoring output from Donovan Mitchell to avoid a sweep at the hands of the home team. The All-Star is averaging 17.0 points on a 39% FG clip and a cold 24% from the 3-Point area in 3 games vs. the Raptors.

Raptors 110, Cavs 115
